Fat Cats Club
History and Background
Background
Fat Cats Cricket club has been in existence from about 2007. Around that time we enlisted in the Last Man Standing (LMS) league, but we didn’t even complete the season due to a myriad of problems including finance and player availability.
It was not until 2018 when it was formalised and accepted by the BOG. That year an interim structure was put in place and by January 2019, the club had a first executive structure, which has been in charge since.
Fat Cats cricket was brought about mainly by people with keen interest in the club. In 2007 when we started, we used to play two games per year, mainly in November/December.
These were termed Blacks v Whites, given that our members were playing against the school mates who happened to be white, from the same schools they attended.
We then decided to get more serious and arranged more fixtures in a year. These took place on public holidays. March 21, April 27, May 2 and September 24 gave us an opportunity to confirm fixtures.
We used to play against each other (split the team into two, and have fun). Famously, the September 24 date became known as Fat Cats cricket day and everyone was welcome, even those who had never held a cricket bat before. They first played cricket on this occasion.
However, over the past three years following the formalisation of the structure, we have morphed into more serious mode. We have acquired a sponsored kit, and registered in a formal league, LMS.
We also host cricket tournaments and, were it not for Covid, we would have embarked on national tours. Future plans include using expertise in our ranks to offer coaching courses. Watch this space!
